Just like hard drives, the actual format in which the media was recorded on the camera can be an inherent issue to Premier Pro battling to play back or crashing.Ī codec like XAVC-L (Long GOP) is a highly efficient codec, meaning that the video files are smaller but require more processing by the software to playback. So Ive been working with Premiere Pro 2021 for a while and it worked 'fine', but I started having some issues with footage I recorded from my iPhone (for some reason they decided to glitch randomly on the timeline and when I exported the project), so I updated to Premiere Pro 2022, and heres where. When this improves stability, you have then found your cause. One thing to do if Premiere Pro keeps crashing is to disconnect an I/O device. Video and audio interfaces can also be the root of Premiere Pro crashes. The crash occurs because the software is trying to load the plug-in.Īlthough, for some reason, it is not compatible with that version of Premiere Pro. In case Premiere Pro crashes on open, it could well be a plug-in issue. Trashing preference simply means resetting Premiere Pro to factory settings.ĭoing so removes a lot of the preferences you may have changed in the program. This is a very good way of fixing a wide range of different issues and will most of the time be the first port of call if something seems wrong in Premiere Pro. It is certain that you might have experienced issues with. If it is not enough, buy more RAM and install it there. Adobe Premiere Pro is a video editing software that can be used to edit and export videos. e) Then, check if you have enough RAMĪnother general issue with Premiere Pro slowing down and stopping can be not having enough RAM available. Make sure your hard drive is fast enough for your work. In case playback skips frames and struggles, start by reducing the resolution down to a quarter in the playback window. d) Fourthly, check if your hard drive can handle the workloadĪ usual and evident cause of a slow-down or crash in Premiere Pro can be the hard drive(s) attached. It is important to note that if you do keep having crashes during playback, disabling GPU usage during playback (or render) could be worthwhile. c) Thirdly, check and disable your GPUĪlthough GPU support has been quite volatile in the past, Premiere Pro CC support has become much more stable. It could solve the problem of frequent crashes. Check to make sure your software is updated and update it if it is not updated. Updates can solve so many issues with software performance. b) Secondly, check if your premiere pro is updated In case you are using a Mac, Premiere Pro’s standard “I-frame only MPEG” codec used for all sequences by default, may not be the most stable choice to use.īe it that this only affects playback when you are editing, changing this to a ProRes format has solved many Premiere Pro crashes in the past. Most of Moulding's stuff seems underdeveloped (the herky-jerky "Cross Wires" and goofy "Do What You Do").īut his "I'll Set Myself On Fire" is nicely constructed, and Partridge is already spitting out hummable refrains, snappy dynamic shifts, and snarling riffs ("Into The Atom Age" "New Town Animal In A Furnished Cage"). It's mostly fast-paced, danceable pop-punk that spotlights Andrews' buzzing organ and electric piano and Moulding's rubbery bass ("Spinning Top"), mixed up with some deeply weird, shockingly geeky white boy ska music ("I'm Bugged"). The band's debut record after several years of playing live and building a catalogue, produced by John Leckie. Andrews replaced by Dave Gregory (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), 1979. Site, which includes a whimsical record review written byīarry Andrews (keyboards), Terry Chambers (drums), Colin Moulding (bass, vocals) Andy Partridge (vocals, guitar, some percussion). The major exception is Rag & Bone Buffet, which I review below.įans should check out the large and interesting XTC web I have omitted mention of several compilation albums, including Waxworks, Beeswax, and Fossil Fuel, because most of this material is available on the bonus-track augmented CDs. Technical expertise of 1980s King Crimson with the pop sensibilities of, well, the Beatles But their later records sound even better to me, impressively blending the studio gimmickry and The lack of public performances blunted their rise to fame, and their madcap songwriting productivity also took a nosedive at about the same time. Eventually Partridge's crippling stage fright made it impossible for them to tour, which led to their drummer quitting the band and moving to Australia (they never replaced him, using a succession of studio players on the records that followed). At an early stage they replaced their keyboardist (Barry Andrews, later of Shriekback) with Dave Gregory. Always more melodic and inventive than pure punk acts, they were a major success in Britain but had trouble breaking through in America, even though they toured internationally and earned a large college audience. XTC originated in the English town of Swindon in the mid-70s, and quickly jumped on the punk bandwagon once that movement hit. In any case, despite XTC's lack of major commercial success you've got to grant that they at least rate with Elvis Costello, the Jam, the Police, and U2 among the most enduring and important European New Wave rock acts. Multi-instrumentalist Dave Gregory never drew too much attention to himself, but he's good, and it's a shame he recently left the group during their first serious recording sessions in a half-decade. Guitarist Andy Partridge, who writes about 2/3 of the tunes, delivers clever and engaging lyrics with genuine poetic merit and the remaining material, written by Moulding, is always solid. And XTC easily makes up for any lack of chops with consistency, inventiveness, disregard for passing fads, and almost unerring pop instincts. They don't have a jaw-dropping instrumental virtuoso, but neither do most rock bands, and the three main players are all top-notch musicians - Colin Moulding's bass parts are frequently startling. But XTC has built a substantial hardcore fan following anyway, and also unlike the Talking Heads, they've never really lost their edge: they've consistently delivered quality recordings that show increasing sophistication and maturity instead of burnout and boredom. Neither formulationĮver scored a major American hit, unlike nominal US counterparts the New Wave XTC, but also the late 80s studio-bound, 60s-retro, pop-happy XTC But if you're not careful about digging into their catalogue you may be disappointed, because they've got two faces - there's not just the hard-hitting late 70s/early 80s In my view, XTC is the greatest rock band of the 1980s. From games like Minecraft and RuneScape, services like Netflix, Spotify and Uber, and applications like Opera Mini have all been created using Java. What popular apps use Java?Īs the fifth most popular programming language in the world, there is a long list of popular apps that rely on Java. Oracle does charge for long term support, but this is optional. This means anyone can download it for personal or development use at no cost. Yes, Java is free to use under the license. Why would you need the JDK then? Because the application server will convert JSP into Java servlets and needs to use the JDK to compile the servlets. For example, if you are deploying a web application with JSP, you are technically just running Java programs inside the application server. Sometimes, even if you are not planning to do any Java programming, you still need the JDK installed. On the other hand, if you are planning to do some Java programming, you need to install the JDK instead. Unless you are a software developer, you only need to install Java JRE in your system to run Java programs. The JDK allows you to create and compile Java programs. It has everything the JRE has, but adds the compiler (javac) and tools (like javadoc and jdb). The Java Development Kit (JDK) is the full-featured software development kit for Java developers. JRE cannot be used to create new programs. The JRE software package includes the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), the Java Class Library, the Java command, and other infrastructure. The Java Runtime Environment or JRE contains everything required to run Java applications on your system. Examples of applications that use Java are numerous and widespread but include web browsers, office applications and even mainstream games like Minecraft are based on Java. Java is a programming language and software platform. Sometimes, even if you are not planning to do any Java development on a computer, you still need the JDK installed. The new license permits certain uses, such as personal use and development use, at no cost – but other uses authorized under prior Oracle JDK licenses may no longer be available. The new Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE is substantially different from prior Oracle JDK licenses. It is capable of creating and compiling programs. It has everything the JRE has, but also the compiler (javac) and tools (like javadoc and jdb). The JDK is the Java Development Kit, the full-featured SDK for Java.

Everyone else sees this and also refuses to take the sacrament, showing that Clayton is not at fault for his actions. With the investigation finally over, Clayton is emotionally drained, and during Sunday's church service, refuses to partake of the sacrament, feeling he does not deserve it. Preparing to arrest "Terry", Clayton is forced to kill him in front of "Terry's" wife when "Terry" draws a gun on Clayton, with his wife hysterically telling Clayton to leave. "Terry" admits Jamie is dead, and put her body, along with the others who haven't been found, in a secluded area within a nearby forest. "Terry" admits his guilt and is revealed to be involved with multiple disappearances of other young women around the area, as well as the murders. Clayton deduces that after "Terry" was released, he assumed the identity of a returned missionary who died in a drowning accident, and moved to Brigham City under this new persona. Clayton reveals that he tested Terry's fingerprints from the office and connects him to a criminal who was incarcerated for rape in Arizona several years ago. Among the containers tested is a thermos brought by Peg's boyfriend, but they turn up nothing.Ĭlayton later visits Terry's house and talks to him about the fingerprinting efforts. Later that night and disheartened at his actions, Clayton returns to the bottles gathered from the bar and resumes collecting the fingerprints off them. Forcing himself in, Clayton discovers the man's collection of pornography, but finds nothing relating him to Jamie or the murders. This causes a rift within the community, especially when one house, the home to a photographer and his mother, is particularly against them searching. The following morning, Clayton organizes most male church members and orders them to inquire at every house and search the property for Jamie. Knowing what people can lose, Peg declares, keeps Clayton at work. At the police station, Peg confides to Meredith that Clayton is dedicated to the job because he was involved in a fatal car accident that killed his wife and son, and put him into a coma for several days. Clayton visits the scene and, at his wits end, decides that the killer is indeed someone within Brigham City and not an outsider. Before he can act, Stu is shot to death by the killer, who takes Jamie with him. While on his way back, Stu visits a convenience store and stumbles upon an apparent robbery, finding the store's clerk, a local girl named Jamie, tied up. After collecting all of the bottles, Clayton leaves the team to their respective duties. Clayton and his team organize an effort to gather fingerprints to test against those found at the crime scenes, using beer bottles collected from a local bar. Shocked, Clayton decides to deputize Stu and expands his search to within Brigham City, starting with some migrant workers working for Ralph, a local contractor for Brigham City. The subsequent investigation turns up little evidence, mostly due to Clayton's lack of resources, but tries to keep up with it as best he can.ĭuring the night after a local parade and festival, the body of a local beauty pageant queen is found under a gazebo, raped and strangled. Among the two agents sent is Meredith, who confides to Clayton that the killer is likely someone within Brigham City, a claim Clayton doesn't believe. Since Wes has no experience in murder investigations and because he wants to keep the murder's influence out of his town, he calls in the FBI from their closest office in Salt Lake City, Utah. While driving with Terry one day, they stumble upon the body of a young women who has been beaten to death in an isolated shack off the road. His only staff are the witty Peg, his receptionist, Stu ( Wilford Brimley), the elderly former sheriff of Brigham City, and Terry, a young and idealistic deputy. In Clayton's entire career, there have never been any serious or heinous crimes reported in Brigham City, and generally remains optimistic about the town's friendly nature. Clayton is a devout Latter-Day Saint who is one of seventeen bishops in the town. Wes Clayton ( Richard Dutcher) is the town sheriff of the small, idyllic town of Brigham City, Utah. It was financed by private investors.īecause of the in-movie descriptions of geography and population, it depicts a fictional Utah town of Brigham City rather than the actual town of Brigham City. It was written and directed by Richard Dutcher, who also plays in the main role of Sheriff Wes Clayton. Brigham City is a 2001 murder mystery independent film. (Image credit: CrashPlan)įor questions about the software and data restoration, CrashPlan also has an extensive online documentation library. You can also take greater control over your backups with scheduled transfers.ĬrashPlan support is available by chat, email, or phone during normal business hours. Thanks to this, it’s pretty simple to set and forget your data recovery plan with CrashPlan. One of the biggest advantages to CrashPlan is that you can set the software to continuously back up files from your computer to the cloud. Unfortunately, multi-threaded backup and recovery isn’t supported, so large recoveries may take a while. On top of that, CrashPlan offers incremental transfers and block-level sync, so most file uploads shouldn’t be particularly large after your initial backup. Since CrashPlan mostly operates in the background, the occasional lengthy upload won’t be a huge issue for many users. We were able to download the 1 GB file in just under four minutes with a 44 Mbps connection. (Image credit: CrashPlan)ĭownloading, which isn’t subject to deduplication, was much better from the start. With CrashPlan, you can to choose multiple data storage locations, including local drives. That same 1 GB file uploaded in under five minutes. But, turning off data deduplication in the program’s advanced settings made a huge difference. The software took a full 20 minutes to upload a 1 GB file to the cloud on a 25 Mbps connection-about four times as long as we would have expected. One of the areas in which CrashPlan falls most short is performance. So, if an entire hard drive goes down, restoring everything from the cloud requires some patience. CrashPlan’s cloud interface doesn’t allow you to easily tag an entire directory for download in one click. When it comes to file recovery, restoring data can be somewhat cumbersome. On the other hand, it’s easy to forget to tag a folder for backup. On the one hand, it’s quick and simple to make sure you’re backing up all your files to a recovery drive or your cloud space. The software tags files by folder location rather than file type, which can be both good and bad. Surprisingly, CrashPlan doesn’t offer a mobile app.ĬrashPlan’s file restore interface. There’s also a web client that enables you to schedule backups. CrashPlan: Client and client setupĬrashPlan is available as a desktop platform for macOS, Windows, and Linux computers, or it can be installed on Linux servers. That means you can keep a catalog of file versions that extends for years rather than months. Importantly, the software doesn’t automatically remove deleted files from your cloud storage without permission. That’s extremely important when recovering from file corruptions or ransomware, since you may need to go back a few versions to find a clean copy of your damaged files. You’re able to keep old versions of files indefinitely, and you have a significant amount of control over how file versions are kept with CrashPlan. That means you can create one or more physical recovery hard drives as well as keep a catalog of files for recovery in the cloud.įile versioning, a feature usually associated with backup tools, is another strength for CrashPlan. But, you can also back up files to multiple storage locations at the same time. (Image credit: CrashPlan)ĬrashPlan comes with its own unlimited cloud storage space, which serves as the default launch point for file recovery. You can customize your versioning settings to better recover after a ransomware attack. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads. As you import media files – photos and videos – the Auto-Analyzer processes them in order to set over 25 Smart Tags with information about them – for quality (e.g., low/high, focus/blurred, too bright/dark, shaky), and for characteristics including the number of objects, faces in the scene (one/multiple, close/long shot), motion (pan, tilt, zoom), and audio (dialog music, low/high volume). The key technology behind the scenes in Elements is the Auto-Analyzer. Auto Analyzeīut there’s more – Adobe has leveraged tags well beyond manual settings. But it’s the tagging tools that provide real leverage when working with a large media collection.īy categorizing your media, with albums, tags, and ratings, you’re just a click away from direct access to the media files that you need – from a particular event, or with certain people, or at a specific time or place. Like other media browsers, the Elements Organizer is designed to help you browse and view your photos and videos, zooming in and out on thumbnails, and searching by name. Similarly, Photoshop Elements 9 adds high-end technology including the Spot Healing Brush to repair photos, Layer Masks, PhotoMerge Style Match to adjust photos according to the characteristics of another, and enhanced Photomerge Panorama that fills in the edges of panoramas using the amazing content-aware fill from Photoshop CS5.īut, all this technology is useless if you can’t find your media files. The Elements Organizer also adds other new sharing options including Online Albums with animated templates (based on Flash) and uploading directly to Facebook. It also adds additional sophisticated effects, including an animated outlined cartoon look and audio cleaning for background noise, volume and clarity. But these are not simple interfaces with limited features – they are based on Adobe’s corresponding professional tools, and offer sophisticated capabilities including keyframed effects with keyed tracks for videos and layer masks for photos.īesides moving fully to Mac OS, Premiere Elements 9 adds new technology from Premiere Pro, including optimized SD and HD editing including AVCHD, import from DSLR still cameras and compact HD cameras including Flip camcorders, and exporting productions as a Web DVD to post online, complete with scene index and chapter menus. Yes, they have accessible tab-based interfaces (e.g., Organize, Edit, Disc Menus, Share), with tool tips and the Inspiration Browser with how-to tutorials. Premiere Elements for video editing and Photoshop Elements for photo editing are not tools for casual consumers. Both Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements are available individually with the Elements Organizer for $100 list ($80 with rebate), or bundled together for $150 ($120 with rebate).Īdobe clearly believes that consumers need the headroom to step up to more sophisticated projects. The new Elements 9 further emphasizes this focus, as all three components are now equally available on Macintosh as well as on Windows. But the real power of Adobe’s approach with Elements comes when you make the investment to organize and tag your materials (with automated help) – and then can leverage that information for automated editing and enhancement. The Elements Organizer is a handy stand-alone tool in its own right for getting started with editing – you can use it directly to apply simple edits, create slideshows, templated movies and DVDs, and then share online and to mobile devices. But more and more, the focus of the Elements product line is on the separate Elements Organizer tool that is included with both products, to help you catalog and tag and organize your photos and videos. Elements is targeted to “enthusiasts,” the family memory keepers who are serious about organizing and preserving their library of media files, and want the headroom in their editing tools to be able to make sophisticated-looking productions. But for Adobe, video (and photo) editing is not for novice consumers. What is video editing for consumers? Is it focused on quick trims, or should it offer more sophisticated timelines and layered effects? Is it about easy one-click sharing of cell phone videos online and to portable devices, or deeper handling of HD formats from AVCHD to Blu-ray?Īdobe does all of the above with its latest release of Premiere Elements 9, along with the companion Photoshop Elements 9. |
